Dot #1
Ready, Steady, Go!
Here are the logistics for our ‘Join the Dot’s’ Action which is taking place next Saturday, 9th July at 2pm.
Step 1: Make a dot! Check out our ‘DotTastic‘ blogpost for ideas. (If you want to come along, but don’t have a dot – no problem! We will have spares and we will also need people to help hand out leaflets). Also let su know by facebook, twitter, email what your dot is about!
Step 2: Arrange to bring a friend (or three) along!
Step 3: Meet at 1.45pm on St Patricks Bridge on Sat 9th July 2011.
Step 4: Finalise route & stops/ last minute check/questions – practice some chants!
Step 5: Move out to stops. (What are stops? We will spread out in small groups to pre arranged places along Patrick Street and Washington Street. Then as the demo progresses we will be physically joining the dots with rope until we finish at the courthouse with all dots bound together.)
Step 6: Begin demo and call at all stops
Step 7: End at Courthouse with rally
Step 8: Retire to the Woodford for a well deserved refreshment and short debriefing session!
Things to note:
1. Nobody will be on there own at any stage throughout the demo. There will be a minimum of two people at every stop along the route.
2. A photographer will be with us throughout the demo. If you do not wish your photograph to be taken, please tell Jen/Linda beforehand.
3. This is going to be brilliant fun! We can’t wait to see you!
DotTastic!
The purpose of this post is to brainstorm around DOT shaped placards for the demo next Sat, 9th July.
NB: If you are coming to the demo, please bring your own dot!
If you want to come along, but don’t want to hold a dot, we will need people to give out leaflets and generally give a hand too!
What kind of dot should I make??
It can be any colour and obviously should be dot shaped (ie a circle) and must have two holes at either side as shown in this diagram. This is so we can ‘join the dots’ together with rope. For size, a good rule of thumb is to get someone to hold the dot and walk a few feet away from you. If you can still read it – it’s a good size! For materials, either pop into your local shop and ask them for some empty crisp boxes or else hit up Easons for an AO Poster Card (about €3). Vibes & Scribes and Cork Art Supplies would also be likely places to get materials. But you should be able to make a great dot with a free piece of cardboard and a permanent marker!
There are five general themes we aim to cover in the demo:
- The sexualisation of young girls
- Objectification of women in advertising/media
- Challenging Myths/Stereotypes like ‘if you’re a slut you deserve it’ and challenging victim shaming
- The acts of sexual violence – rape, date rape, corrective rape and all other forms of sexual assault and abuse
- Justice & the legal system – from comments made by guards to the poor conviction rate
At our planning meeting today, we started chatting and came up with a few different phrases, feel free to use these on dots:
- Rape is never ok
- Over 2/3 of women are raped by someone they know
- Do you find rape jokes funny? I don’t.
- We don’t ever ask to be raped.
- Sex is something you do with me, not to me.
- Rape is about power not desire.
- If you use boobs to sell a product, I won’t buy it.
Going Dotty
For those of you who’ve been on holidays or living under a rock for the past while, Cork Feminista is going dotty in your absence!!!
On Sat 9th July at 2pm, member of Cork Feminista will stage a ‘Join the Dots’ Action in Cork City Centre. Check out more info in this previous post: Join the Dots
We’re getting together this Sat in the Woodford Bar at 2.30pm to plan out the logistics so feel free to come along and help us out!
In the meantime I’ve been thinking about my dot and I think it will be something along these lines:
